Junior Creative Artworker

We have an exciting, year-long graduate position available, created to provide that all-important early experience for newly qualified designers to enter the job market.

The company is embarking on a period of growth and is seeking to recruit new staff who can bring their skills and enthusiasm to add to our experience and reputation to build a business that is set for the next 28 years!

As graphic designers of many years standing, we recognise the difficulty that many new graduates can experience in getting into their first job, and it is with that in mind that we have created a new opportunity for a Junior Creative Artworker who will work in our studio in Guildford on design and production of projects in both printed and digital media.


What is the job?

This position is a 1-year (max) contract, created to provide that all-important early experience for newly qualified designers to enter the job market. During your time working at FdK Design Consultants you will be using industry-standard equipment and software and working on real projects for real clients that you can add to your portfolio. We will provide any necessary training and guidance to enable you to apply the skills you have acquired at college to work in a commercial environment.

During the period of the contract we will give you regular reviews and offer help and guidance in the preparation of your portfolio. We will also assist you in any ‘next step’ job applications that you make, or in setting up your own freelance business at the end of the contract.

By then, you will have acquired the skills, experience and portfolio samples to enable you to secure that dream job or set up on your own, and leave the space for the next new graduate to take up the role. There may also be the opportunity for full employment at FdK Design Consultants. We have a 100% record of our graduates going straight into another design job after only two or three interviews, so we are keen to maintain that and will expect a high standard from applicants for this post.

We will expect new entrants to have learned the essential software and design skills while completing their qualifications, but we may also provide in-house or external training in specific aspects of the job, such as communication and presentation skills, time recording and management, budgeting and administration.

The successful applicants will help us produce designs that get our clients’ messages across effectively and with high visual impact. We work with a wide range of clients on a huge variety of projects, including advertising and printed sales collateral, websites, digital and e-marketing, packaging, corporate identity and branding, exhibitions and displays.


Who are you?

You will be newly-graduated in graphic design, graphic communication, visual communication, advertising, digital communication design or a related subject, and have a real desire to embark on a career in design, and be keen and willing to adapt to the different environment of commercial design.

You will be interested in design in general, perhaps already blogging or using social media to express your interests, and have a hunger to learn more about how design impacts on every aspect of our lives and how businesses use it to grow their sales and reputations.

Your portfolio will be full of examples of projects undertaken at university that will demonstrate original, creative thinking, understanding of audiences, budgets and different media, as well as a keen eye for detail. It will also demonstrate your skills with the core software packages of design.

You will be familiar with working on Apple computers and comfortable using the Adobe Creative Suite, and be used to working closely with other colleagues involved in projects, such as designers, copywriters, photographers and sales staff.

What is the work like?

You will work to bring many kinds of communication alive, producing designs that get our clients’ messages across effectively and with high visual impact. The role demands a keen business sense as well as creative flair.

Graphic design input is required for a huge variety of products and activities, including:

– Websites
– Packaging
– Books and magazines
– Corporate identity – to give organisations a visual ‘brand’
– Advertising
– Exhibitions and displays
– Apps and other digital media

Tasks are likely to include:

– Finding out about the project requirements (taking a ‘brief’)
– Coming up with design concepts that fit the client’s needs
– Presenting options for design treatments
– Creating final designs, working to a deadline and budget
– Amending designs according to the client’s final comments
– Proofreading and preparing designs to be sent to print

Apart from rough sketches, most graphic design work is now done on computer. Graphic designers use specialised industry-standard graphics or multimedia software packages.

You will take briefs from an account manager or partner who has responsibility for client contact, and as well as working closely with them, you may also occasionally deal directly with clients.

You will also have to work closely with other colleagues involved in projects, such as copywriters, photographers and sales staff. In order to win work, you may take part in formal presentations to ‘pitch’ our company to potential clients.


Hours and environment

Normal working time is 9.00 to 5.30 (37.5 hours a week), Monday to Friday. Extra hours may occasionally be required, especially to meet critical project deadlines.

You will work in our light and open plan studio in Guildford, with all equipment provided. The building has parking, a secure rack for bikes, and showers; there are bus stops close by; and the rail station is a 40-minute walk away.
